Since spaying is a more intricate procedure than neutering, it may take your pet a bit longer to recover. She may have to stay at the vet overnight and she'll likely be lethargic and sore when she returns home. Follow these steps to make sure your pet has a pleasant post-op experience.
Monitor your pet to ensure she does not scratch or bite the stitches and pull them out.
Keep her as quiet as possible and don't let her go outside.
Keep other pets in the household away from her while she heals.
After a few days, you may see some swelling at the incision area and it should be firm to the touch. This is normal. If you see any kind of discharge, however, contact your vet immediately.
After three to four weeks, your pet should be back to normal and the wound should have healed completely. Check with your vet if the incision has not healed by that time.
