If you have your heart set on a purebred dog, be prepared to pay! Even "pet quality" purebreds, who aren't up to snuff for the show ring, can go for more than $1,000 depending on the breed. Upscale pet stores may even charge $3,000 or more for a pup.
A responsible breeder will:
- Find out whether you want your dog as a pet or for companionship, working or competing.
- Provide at least a three-generation pedigree (maybe more) with championship titles.
- Provide certifications showing the dog's hips, elbows and eyes are free of defects.
- Ask questions, even getting nosy sometimes. Responsible breeders want to be sure their dogs are only sold to customers who will give them the best possible lives.
- Require that if a buyer cannot keep a dog any longer, he or she will return the dog to the breeder, who can then be sure it has a good home.
